“I wanted to write a play about estrangement,” says North Florida born and bred playwright, director and actor Ian Mairs, “that moment when someone in a family is discussing a relationship and says, ‘Oh, they don’t speak anymore.’ It’s a very weird thing.” And, as Mairs proves, it makes for great drama, particularly for Mother Mona, [played by Limelight Theatre executive director Beth Lambert] who is determined to prevent her daughter Lurleen [played by Lambert’s real daughter, Rachel Robertson] from heading down the same road she traveled. She’s a Big Girl Now explores three generations of mother-and daughter relationships and a personal history that has a way of repeating itself, in spite of Mona’s best efforts.
She’s a Big Girl Now is set in Jacksonville and Brunswick, Georgia between 1979 and 1994. The inspiration for the play was Southern women Mairs has known throughout his life. “In North Florida, we have a mighty crew of women from the South who can really make us laugh and cry onstage. I wanted to write a play about them,” he explains. “I also wanted to explore the patterns of behavior which get handed down from generation to generation, just the like the silver or the china.
