In the Name of Love by Lưu Huỳnh does just that, in a controversial film loaded with dark humor, gory violence, and raw sexuality. Huỳnh again proves why he’s one of Viet Nam’s top directors, as he gives us an entertaining psychosexual drama that delivers a stunning lesson about the price of love.

The movie tells the story of Lụa (Đinh Y Nhung) and her husband Khánh (Huy Khánh), a young couple in a small fishing village. Their loving marriage is marred only by Khánh’s sterility, and thus their inability to have the children he so longs for. For her husband’s happiness, Lụa secretly arranges to be impregnated by another man in the village (Thái Hòa)—but when their son is born, it quickly becomes clear that she has made a terrible choice of sperm donor.

The film puts a different spin on the traditional love triangle, as it shifts from drama to thriller, and accelerates into surreal violence. An intimate story about the lengths people will go through to find happiness, the film shatters any notions of rural life as more peaceful than that of the city. Instead, it can be wild, passionate and dangerous. In the Name of Love will leave you breathless.
